Commercial Refrigeration Maintenance Bath
February 17, 2012The combined cost of food inside a commercial refrigerator could surprise you in how high it actually is, as everything from the meat, salad and chilled drinks you store inside and serve each day will amount to a sizeable amount of money. If your refrigerator was to suddenly break down, the loss could be incredibly hard to take in this tough financial climate, so having the right maintenance for all refrigeration Bath systems, like that offered from us here at Carlton Services, is essential for keeping costs down and maintaining a healthy service.
Our thorough maintenance service will help to ensure the upkeep of all refrigeration Swindon systems with fully qualified engineers who know exactly what to look for to prevent a fault, and will check all components and fine tune them so that the refrigerator is working at its optimum level. However, we do also understand that at times the worst case scenario can strike, leaving you without a functioning refrigerator and at the impending risk of having to waste food. This can also be avoided as our engineers are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with rapid response repairs that can stop a complete service shutdown. When it comes to refrigerators, the main services we offer are:
- Emergency repair and servicing
- Maintenance
- Installation (We are also Foster approved installers and agents)
- Free site surveys with regards to sales, projects and contracts
The cost of a broken refrigerator doesn’t only apply to the cost of food either, as whether you own a restaurant or run a catering service inside an office, the health problems that can be caused by food that isn’t kept at the optimum temperature could be harmful to the image of your company. To keep your refrigeration Bath in check, make sure to contact Carlton Services.

Posted in Latest News |An Interview with a Carlton Engineer
July 6, 2011What type of work do you offer at Carlton Services?
Sales, Installation, Service, Maintenance and Breakdowns of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, Catering and Ventilation/Extraction systems. As a satellite engineer, we can be working anywhere from the local butchers or cafes, to large frozen food distribution centres or large corporate offices. It keeps the job interesting and you certainly get to see more of the world then if you were an on-site engineer. Most recently we have actually been installing Air Conditioning in our own offices! The company has been going 33 years, and we thought it was about time we practiced what we preach.
What qualifications do you need to do your job?
All engineers have done a minimum of 2 years at college where they took an NVQ2 course in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, spending 4 days at work and 1 at college. This course involved on site assessments and building Refrigeration systems in college with other students. In this course everyone would have received their 2078 safe handling of refrigerant, although as of July 2011 we must have completed the 2079 safe handling course, thankfully we did this in the winter months when we were at our quietest, so now everyone is ready for the summer rush.
How many miles can you cover on a typical day/month?
It all depends really, with summer being the busier period for the Refrigeration department I would say we do more miles when it’s hot! I would say a typical week in the winter could have you driving about 300 miles, where as in the summer it’s not uncommon for people to do over 1000 miles in a week.
What are the most difficult things to repair?
I wouldn’t say anything is difficult to repair, just that some things are more challenging than others. But being an engineer, we tend to thrive on the more technical jobs, if you just went round replacing condenser fan motors all the time it would be too easy and too boring! Every now and again a job comes along that you have to sit down and think about, but then by the time you’ve drawn the system out, and done a schematic of the electrics, it all makes sense and you start working towards getting the system up and running again.
How do you ensure that you and your customers keep safe?
Health and safety has a big part to play in our jobs, every job requires a method statement and risk assessment before we can start, many of the sites we go to we have to be inducted before we can do anything, and the company will send us on any relevant training courses and keep us informed of current legislation.
What are the latest regulations that you have to be aware of when working?
For the Refrigeration boys it’s been the 2079 safe handling of refrigerant, but we have always been working to the same standard, it’s just that for this we had to prove it! I know the catering department recently had air analysers bought for them for checking Co2 levels in kitchens to make sure the extraction system is doing what it should and that gas levels are not high in the kitchen. They work to regulation BS 6173.
What is the most challenging job that you’ve been called out on?
The very first time I got called out for an emergency job in an evening, I got called to a factory to work on a cascade system. I was quite fortunate as I had worked on a similar system during my apprenticeship and had re-built certain parts of it. I remember talking myself through the step by step process of checking that it was working to its design parameters, I had called a more senior engineer on the way to site, and I was determined to phone him back with a positive answer as we had worked very closely when I was an apprentice. After about 30-40 minutes on site, I traced the fault to a solenoid valve that had failed and was causing hot refrigerant to pass straight into the evaporator, this wouldn’t be a problem if the unit was down at its -80C set point and was keeping the temperature constant, but it was only at about -35C. After pumping the system down and replacing the valve, I got the system on vac and phoned the senior engineer back, brimming with confidence and feeling really happy for myself, we had a quick chat then I got back to work and completed the job. I don’t think the nature of the fault was that challenging, but it was my first call out, and I didn’t have much experience as I had only recently qualified as a Refrigeration engineer, so that one tends to stick in my mind.
What is the best thing about your job?
It would be a tough choice between meeting new people or the job satisfaction of leaving a system running. It’s great that I get to travel to so many different places, take yesterday for example: I started off looking at an ice machine in a pub, went off to a factory to look at a Refrigeration system in a storage area, then finished the day looking at a VRF in an office block. I got to speak to different people in different aspects of the working environment and it’s a real perk of the job. It’s also a nice feeling when you have got to site with a system not running, and by the time you leave it is, the customer is happy, you’ve done a good job, and you can move on to the next job knowing that you’ve sorted out a problem for someone.
