Scope of Work
Project Duration: 5 Days
Installed: February 2025
Location: Roves Farm, Wiltshire
Type of Project: Farm Shop Refrigeration System Upgrade
Overview
Roves Farm, a popular visitor attraction and farm shop in Wiltshire, had been relying on Carlton Services for ongoing maintenance and emergency refrigeration support. However, during the hot summer months, their existing refrigeration setup struggled to maintain stable temperatures, which affected the quality of produce and contributed to excessive heat in the already warm retail space.
The existing display units, with open-fronted cabinets (some of which had makeshift plastic curtain additions), were inefficient and visually unappealing. Roves Farm approached us for a complete redesign of their refrigeration solution—one that would be energy-efficient, reliable, and better showcase their produce.
Our Solution
We proposed and installed a custom solution consisting of:
- 7m Multiplexed Chiller: Built using Tefcold Trojan T26 and T20 units.
- 3.5m Freezer: A Tefcold Trojan T32, completing the cold storage line-up.
These cabinets were finished in sleek black, with glass doors, LED lighting, and red meat-specific lighting to enhance product visibility and appeal.
To power this system efficiently, we installed:
- Danfoss Optyma Condensing Units (remotely located outdoors to remove heat from the shop floor)
- Complete pipework and interconnecting electrical cabling
- Dairy pumps for managing condensate water
We also responsibly removed and disposed of the outdated open-fronted units.
Project Benefits
Improved Energy Efficiency
By switching from open-fronted units to glass-doored systems, the fridges and freezers now retain cool air much better, resulting in reduced running times and lower energy costs.
Better In-Store Environment
With condensing units placed externally, the refrigeration system no longer contributes excess heat to the shop, significantly improving working and shopping conditions.
Enhanced Product Display
The combination of LED lighting and red meat lighting makes the produce stand out, improving visual appeal and potentially increasing sales.
Longer Shelf Life
Improved temperature consistency and reduced heat gain will help extend the freshness of perishable items, reducing waste.
Installation Timeline
This full upgrade was completed in one week at the end of February 2025, with minimal disruption to farm shop operations.
